The Owl's Tree

The Owl's Tree

I feel like I'm moving at a snail's pace with the output of the past year. I'll be heading to the Virginia mountains for three weeks to commune with the autumn vibe, the cooler weather, and doing nothing but creating art. One can hope for the creating art part. There will be wine. That is assured.

Because it seems like forever since I finished a painting, I've likened myself to Enya or Sade. You know, an album every eight years or so. A painting every eight months or so. This one took me much longer than I wanted it to. Mainly because I didn't know what I wanted to do. And, a ton of painter's tape was involved.

The canvas had been sitting around for a while with the taped angles and boxes just painted in with a color, then a month ago I added the tree and I was diggin' that idea. After working on just the background for a month I decided it needed a focal point.

So I added an owl, because owls are cool and I guess I'm in my bird period. Originally I was just going keep the owl entirely white, no real patterning or decoration. But, patterns happen. It's my thing.

When I was resizing this in Photoshop I accidentally hit the "invert" option and gotta say, I'm also diggin' this color shift.

As of 10/15/25, this painting is hanging up at Spring Street Studios for the 50 Artists Houston book exhibition. I have an entry in the book, which is very cool and I'm very honored to have and entry in it.
